Guitar & Mandolin Instructor

John Holenko

John Holenko received degrees in Classical Guitar performance from the New England Conservatory, and the University of Southern California. John Holenko has performed on classical guitar, steel-string guitar, mandolin, and historic instruments throughout the United States and in Europe with the early music group Sonus, The Hungry Monks, an eclectic, acoustic ensemble that plays a wide variety of traditional and original music, and with Porto Seguro, an ensemble playing Brazilian chorus and bossa nova. John has performed with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra, and the Spoleto Orchestra. Mr. Holenko is very active in music education through his teaching studio Hungry Monk Music, American Music Systems, residencies through the South Carolina Arts Commission, Charlotte Children’s Theatre in Charlotte, NC, and at the Cuyahoga Valley Environmental Education Center in Ohio, where he has also been Artist-in Residence. John has made a number of recordings including a solo guitar recording, three Hungry Monks recordings, and guest appearances on several other artists recordings. Mr. Holenko has published several editions with Mel Bay Publications.

Piano Instructor

Cindy Kearney

Cindy Kearney has been playing piano since she was 8 years old and has never looked back. She studied jazz at Georgia State University while living in Atlanta and also studied privately with various jazz pros in the Atlanta area. Since then she has been performing with different groups over the years, both as a keyboard player and a vocalist. Once she became a mom of two small children, she added teaching to her music repertoire back in 2006. She has taught the Music for Young Children curriculum for upwards of twelve years and has also been teaching private piano and vocal lessons since then at Hungry Monk Music in Charleston. Other music endeavors in the last 20 years still include performing with her band J.A.N.E., playing occasional gigs with other musicians (Charleston Music Hall), and recording music.

Ukulele Master

Noodle McDoodle

Noodle McDoodle is Charleston's premiere ukulele player and instructor. A member of the bands The V-Tones, The Amazing Mittens, Lime and the Coconuts, and She Goes He Goes, Noodle can be seen around Charleston playing with any number of musicians. Noodle has taught private lessons, group workshops and summer camps and is the music instructor at The Cooper School in Charleston. Noodle has been a friend of Hungry Monk Music for years now.

Percussion Instructor

Matt Masie

Originally from Holbrook, New York, Mathew Masie attended the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston where he studied with Wil Hudgins of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Later he received his Master’s of Music degree from DePaul University in Chicago where he studied with Michael Green, principal percussionist of the Chicago Lyric Opera Orchestra, and Ted Atkatz, former principal percussionist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. When he is not teaching at Hungry Monk Music, Mathew keeps himself busy playing with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra, the North Charleston Pops Orchestra, Charleston Stage, and The Hungry Monks.
